In 1953, thirteen year old Minnie was relocated from Inukjuak to Grise Fiord with her parents; Mary and Paddy Aqiatusuk, her brothers and sisters.
The first thing is that we were moved all the way from Quebec. We survived solely because of two men, two sets of families because they helped us. Akpaliapik and Arnakallak came from Mittimatalik to help the people from Inukjuak. Those two men helped us and that’s why we survived. Because we didn’t know this place since we don’t come from a place where it gets this dark.
Those who were the first original people to be relocated are passing away. There are not many of us anymore. Our descendants need to be aware of the relocation.
